4th Round Formula Volkswagen: Zolder 19.8.01

Flying Finn: Marko Nevalainen wins in Zolder The fourth round of the Formula Volkswagen supported by Sachs took place in Zolder, Belgium. At the occasion of the ““Race Festival”” at the 3.977 km long former Grand Prix-track, Finnish driver Marko Nevalainen won from local hero Philip Cloostermans and German Sven Barth Already in the two qualifying sessions, there was plenty of action, with no less than fourteen drivers qualifying within one second. Cloostermans got the most out of his home advantage and claimed pole position. Sven Barth, winner of the most recent round at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, lined up alongside him. Australian Rob Nguyen, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Thursday, was third on the grid. Nevalainen was one of the few drivers who was able to improve his lap time in the second session. He qualified fifth behind Jarno Unland Pole-sitter Cloostermans benefited from his good position and took the lead at the start of the race from Barth, Unland and Nguyen. The second Belgian in the field, Kim Hermans, was less fortunate. The driver from Alken, only a few miles away from Zolder, spun at the Jacky Ickx-chicane and retired. There were also some position changes among the front runners: Jarno Unland dropped back two places and had to let Nguyen and Nevalainen past In the following laps, Nevalainen continued his overtaking race. He took third place from Nguyen and quickly closed the gap to second-placed Barth. On lap six, he went past Barth under braking for the first corner and claimed second from Barth, Unland and Nguyen. But it didn’’t stop there for the Scandinavian. At the same place, he started his first attack at Cloostermans on lap nine. The action was successful: they went into the corner side by side and Nevalainen was the first to come out

Once in front, Nevalainen extended his lead and finally drove home his maiden win in the category in a dominant way. Cloostermans finished second from Sven Barth. ““It was an excellent race. I just waited for my chances and then I made the best possible use of them””, said the happy winner. He carries on with a successful finish tradition in Formula Volkswagen – fellow Finn Keke Rosberg once celebrated many race wins in the Formula Super Vee.
