3rd Round Formula Volkswagen: Eurospeedway 5.8.01

Sven Barth wins in the Lausitz The third round of the Formula Volkswagen supported by Sachs brought victory for Sven Barth (D). At the 4.534 km long Grand Prix-track of the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, Australian Rob Nguyen came home in second place ahead of Elran Nijenhuis (The Netherlands Rob Nguyen was fastest in qualifying. The driver of the Penker Racing Team established a best lap time of 1.44.268 minutes, over two tenths of a second faster than Böhm Motorsport-driver Sven Barth, who claimed second place on the grid. The Austrian WT Motorsport-team completely locked out the second row on the grid with Elran Nijenhuis and Stefan Haak At the start of the race, Nguyen immediately took the lead, but behind him, there was a lot of turmoil. Belgian Philip Cloostermans and German Bastian Kolmsee collided on the first corner, came off the track and retired. Shortly after, Florian Stoll and Italian Christian Gratl did the same. Nguyen was unaffected by it all. He drove his laps consistently and kept Sven Barth behind him.  Elran Nijenhuis was third, while Haak had to defend his fourth position against a charging Walter Lechner jr. Henrik Wilking put the pressure on Lechner, but the Austrian countered successfully The race leader didn’’t have an easy job. Sven Barth followed him like a shadow, waiting for his chance, but initially, Nguyen remained in front. Everything seemed clear for Elran Nijenhuis in third place, but behind him, the fight for fourth position with Haak, Wilking and Lechner continued. On lap ten, Wilking retired after having hit a tyre barrier One lap later, Barth managed to outbrake Nguyen and took the lead. Once in front, he pulled away immediately. Finn Marko Nevalainen closed up to Lechner and Haak, and so did Peter Heinrichsberger, so that the duo became a quartet. On lap 14, Lechner past Haak and was fourth

In the closing stages of the race, Sven Barth extended his lead and celebrated his first season victory in the Formula Volkswagen supported by Sachs. Rob Nguyen finished second, just ahead of Elran Nijenhuis, as Lechner maintained his point lead with fourth place.
